Introduction
Nari Bai, original name of Karni Mata, was born in Hindu family of Charan Caste. She was wife of Depoji Charan, from village of Sathika. She later on expressed her unwillingness to her husband to engage in conjugal relations. Nari Bai insisted and arranged her sister Gulab's marriage with Depoji, so that he can have a prosperous and settled married life.
She is worshiped as the incarnation of warrior goddess Durga by her followers. The famous temple of of Karni mata is in Deshnoke near Bikaner district of Rajasthan. Karni Mata is Deity of Royal families of Jodhpur and Bikaner. Bikaner Fort and Mehrangarh Fort's foundation was laid by Karni Mata, on request of Maharanas of Bikaner and Jodhpur.
Temple in Udaipur
Shrimanshapurna Karni Mata temple is located on Machla Hills of Udaipur, Rajasthan. This Temple in on top of the Machla hills. One can reach the temple by taking steps to the hill or there is another exciting experience through Ropeway. Ropeway is available from Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Park. One can experience a wonderful view of Udaipur city from this temple.
An eye pleasing view of Pichola lake and City Palace along with Sunset will make your day. You can see big Rats in this temple, which are considered as the messenger of your wishes from Karni Mata. As the name indicates "Manshapurna" means she fulfills all wishes of her followers.
This temple was developed by Maharana Karan Singh, for safety of Udaipur. This temple was deserted for the long period of time after its construction. In 1997, Shri Manshapurna Karni Mata development committee was established, which rebuilt the temple and made it a center of attraction for all the tourists and localities.
Interesting Facts about Karni Mata
- Karni lived nomadic life with her followers and a herd of cattle.
- She wandered different places for a long period of time and stayed in many villages in camps. Finally she was settled in Deshnok near Bikaner.
- Her first Temple was constructed by her follower "Amara Charan" in the village of "Mathania"
- She laid the foundation stone of "Fort of Bikaner" in 1485.
- She had a stepson, "Poonjar"
- Goddess Karni Mata is believed to protect the 'Krishna Saara Mriga' (Blackbuck).
At the age of 151, she was travelling with Poonjar and her followers, they were near 'Gadiyala' in Bikaner District, she stopped with her Caravan for drinking water and rest for a while. Since then she reported disappeared. Nobody found her back.
